Kaskaskia River is now designated as a national marine highway

Many exciting things are happening with the Kaskaskia Regional Port District and General Manager Ed Weilbacher recently gave an update to the North County News.

The big news for the port district is the recent designation by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) of the Kaskaskia River as a marine highway. “It’s a big deal,” Weilbacher stated.

The Kaskaskia River’s marine highway designation is the M-3, named for State Route 3 which crosses the river locally, and this designation covers the entire navigational stretch ranging from the Mississippi River to Fayetteville.
