Last Friday, the body of a man who had attempted to swim across the Mississippi River was found in rural Monroe County west of Maeystown.
In a press release, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department stated that at 9:43 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, deputies were dispatched to the area of Levee Road near Mitchie Road for a report of a body floating near the shore on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. Deputies arrived and located the body of an adult male.
The deceased has been identified as Caleb M. Moriarity, 36, homeless and formerly of Indiana.
