A local World War II hero was remembered and honored with a special ceremony held at the Evansville American Legion on Sunday, Nov. 14.
Gilbert G. Prosek of Chester had enlisted in the United States Marines in 1942 at the age of 21. After completing basic training, with the rank of private first class, he was sent to the war’s Pacific Theater, specifically to Cape Gloucester, New Britain Island (an island in Papua New Guinea). He was stationed there during the Battle of Cape Gloucester.
