Musketeers battle in loss against Carlyle

by Trent Sternberg

The Red Bud Musketeers hosted the Indians of Carlyle in a Cahokia Conference, Illinois division, matchup on Jan. 3. Red Bud would have their work cut out for them as Carlyle was coming into the game ranked 19th in the state for 2A schools according to PointGuard21 rankings. The Indians’ heights challenged the Musketeers’ since all of their starters are taller than 6’1”.

There was no doubt that in the opening quarters, Red Bud had a plan to slow the pace of play down and limit offensive possessions. Red Bud played a triangle and two defense which threw Carlyle off in the first half of play. Red Bud caused havoc on the defensive end and got some steals that led to lay-ups. After the first half of play, Red Bud was happy to head into the locker room only trailing 18-13. Red Bud’s Luke Quintin, Lucas Schwartzkopf, and Trent Sternberg all had four points for the Musketeers.
