RAISING AWARENESS–There is a developing situation along the Stringtown Levee in rural Monroe County, not too far from Fort de Chartres. A scour hole there is getting bigger and poses an immediate threat to the levee. As part of their efforts to bring attention to the issue and get the state to fix the problem, several local officials met with a television news crew last week. Pictured in front of part of the scour hole are: Monroe County EMA Public Safety Director Kevin Scheibe, State Representative David Friess and Monroe County Board Chairman George Green.
Recently, local officials have been trying to bring attention to a scour hole located near the Stringtown Levee in rural Monroe County, not too far from Fort de Chartres.
Originally discovered in 2010, this scour hole has grown quite large and is getting closer to the levee, which could eventually cause it to fail.
In August, State Representative David Friess released a statement about the situation. In it, he noted that he and State Senator Terri Bryant are urging Governor JB Pritzker to help in the situation by directing the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) to immediately deploy resources and funding to address this emergency.
In addition to the letter to the governor, Friess, as well as numerous other local officials, are trying to raise awareness of the situation. They hope that in doing so, more people will reach out to the governor’s office on the matter.
