Christy Hatfield shared this picture of a fairy ring that appeared in the yard of Roger Hess, Sr. in Ruma. The circle of mushrooms originates when an underground fungus grows out from a central point creating a circle. Once the fungus is ready to produce mushrooms, they will pop up along the outer edge of that circle. Though not uncommon, fairy rings do require specific underground conditions in order to occur. The name “fairy ring” comes from the ancient European belief that the circles would appear in places that fairies danced.
