Betty Schmitz retires from SJL after 32 years

On Sunday, May 3, St. John’s Lutheran Church and School will observe the retirement of long-time kindergarten teacher, Betty Schmitz, with an open house starting at 1 p.m. and lasting until 3 p.m.

Schmitz is a native of Okawville and a graduate of Okawville High School. She continued her education at McKendree College, graduating in 1980. Schmitz later completed her Colliquey program at Concordia Teachers College in River Forest in 1982.

She was first called by St. John’s Lutheran Church and School to teach kindergarten in 1994. Schmitz started the kindergarten program at St. John’s and has maintained it for the last 32 years.
