Red Bud Elementary School will be hosting a “Read and Run Marathon” for all prekindergarten through eighth grade students in the district.
All area students, even those that don’t attend RBES, including home school, St. John’s Lutheran School, St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Trinity Lutheran School and Prairie du Rocher School, are all invited to participate.
This event, which runs from April 15 through May 22, is an opportunity for students to be a part of a reading and running marathon. Each will individually read 26 books an run the equivalent of 26 miles over the upcoming weeks.
For reading, there are page requirements, but it is acceptable for parents to read books to students if needed. For preschool through second grade, 20 literature pages counts as one book; for third through fifth grades, 30 pages counts as one book; and for sixth through eighth grades, 60 pages counts as one book.
As for running, participants can run or walk their miles, or choose other activities that are equivalent to running a mile. Suggestions include: climbing stairs for 20 minutes; housecleaning for 60 minutes, gymnastics practice; jumping rope for 20 minutes; dancing for 30 minutes; mowing the lawn for 30 minutes; playing frisbee for 45 minutes; or riding a bicycle for 30 minutes. Students do not have to complete an entire mile at once, so they should keep track of activities or distance each time they begin.
