“I don’t think I deserve to be up here with all these people,” Robert Cowell humbly told the crowd after being recognized as the Red Bud Citizen of Achievement for 2018.
Cowell was surprised with the special honor at the Red Bud Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner on Saturday, March 9, and was welcomed onto the stage by a group of previous Citizen of Achievement recipients.
“I didn’t do anything, I’m behind the scenes,” he continued. “They (the previous award recipients) put up a lot of time and trouble, and I just have fun. I keep doing it because I love kids.”
Following a standing ovation from those in attendance at the dinner, Chamber President Chris Stenzel read the following about Cowell:
“In the words of Charles W. Howard, who in 1937, established the longest-running Santa Claus School, ‘He errs who thinks Santa enters through the chimney. Santa enters through the heart.’ Such is the case of Red Bud’s 2018 Citizen of the Year, Robert E. “Santa Claus” Cowell.
