CELEBRATING 150 YEARS–During this year’s New Athens Homecoming, the New Athens Historical Society will be featuring a display commemorating the village’s fire department.
This year the New Athens Historical Society will feature a display commemorating the 150 years of the New Athens Fire Department. The museum will be open during the New Athens Homecoming on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 from 6-9 p.m. The museum will also be open on Sunday, July 22 from 2-4 p.m. Many items will be featured along with lots of pictures and history of the Fire Company No. 1.
Fire Company No. 1 was formed in 1868. In 1892 they formed a corporation and received their charter on April 6, 1892. In 1897 Fire Company No. 1 purchased a bell for the tower in the newly built village hall that was going to be their “uptown” fire station. In 1918 they had 80 members and by 1921 they had 98 members.
