The Musketeers took on the Oilers of East-Alton Wood River in a non-conference matchup on Dec. 11. The team knew that this was a winnable game, as the oilers had been struggling early in the season, and they were eager to get out and perform.
The Musketeers came out ready to play and were very energetic and active on defense. The first possession they forced a steal in the spaced out zone defense they were playing. They scored the first two points with a pair of free throws by Jayden Birkner. The Musketeers built off of this and continued to be tenacious on the defensive end. They forced traps and got many steals and fastbreak layups. The great defense lead to great offense. Carter Wiegard was hitting every shot he put up in the first quarter. He hit 3-pointer after 3-pointer and finished the quarter with 17 points on his own. Birkner added a 3-pointer of his own also. The Musketeers were up 23-4 at the end of the first quarter, which was the biggest lead they’d had all year.
The Musketeers continued playing tough, fast defense in the second quarter, Although, Alex Kueker and Wiegard both added two 3-pointers each, the offensive firepower was not as prevalent as it was in the first quarter. The Musketeer still won the quarter 14-10, going into the locker room at halftime with a 37-14 lead.
