A young, local farmer was killed in an accident that happened last Friday night in the Fults area.
Around 8 p.m. on June 14, multiple agencies responded to a call at the intersection of Fults Road and Bluff Road for a fatal crash involving a train and farm tractor.
Illinois State Police Lt. Ken Guard stated that a 23 year old male, driving a farm implement was crossing the railroad tracks and was struck by a southbound train. This resulted in a fire and derailment of several train cars.
Guard stated that only the tractor was on fire, not any of the train cars, and that the fire was small and self extinguished. He also reported that the train was carrying hazardous materials, but those were in cars towards the back of the train and were not involved in the accident.
Monroe County Coroner Bob Hill pronounced the tractor’s driver, Jonah Matthews of Waterloo, as deceased at the scene.
