After 52 years and hundreds of customers, Barry Korves, owner of Barry’s Hair Shop in Red Bud, has decided to retire his scissors.
Korves opened his first barber shop in November of 1967. It was located on South Main, between the current Moto Mart and IGA in a small brick building. In January of 1989 Korves moved to his current location, 121B East Market Street. He has served around 250 customers from Ellis Grove to Belleville and upon retirement was the only barber in Red Bud.
“I have customers who have moved away, but still stop by if they’re in the area,” said Korves.
Korves still worked six days a week. “There’s a lot that goes into it with licenses, cleaning and more,” he said.
“I’m going to miss talking with my customers and I wonder who I will see again. I enjoyed learning what was going on and we talked a lot about farming, hunting and sports. I appreciate all of my customers for their many years of support,” he said.
