Academic Challenge team wins sectional competition

WIN SECTIONALS–Red Bud High School’s Academic Challenge team took first place in their division at the recently held sectional competition. Pictured are team members: in front: Jason Pfannebecker, Zach Sutton, Josh Birke, Hannah Sievers and Caitlin Dehne; in back: LeAnn Walker, Sami Lucht, Hunter Kaltenbach, Landon Hohgrefe, Ethan Fritsche, Ben DeRousse and Dylan Roscow.

The organization formerly known as WYSE is now called ACES (Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science). The competition is the same as when it was called WYSE through the University of Illinois, but Eastern Illinois University is the new sponsor. Participants compete in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics.

Last month in the regional competition, Red Bud High School placed first, to advance to the sectional contest this month; both meets were held at Southwestern Illinois College.

Each participant takes two tests, one from two different testing areas, to compile a team score.

Individual winners for Red Bud at sectionals on March 6 were: Dylan Roscow-first in computer science and math; Landon Hohgrefe-third in computer science and math; Zach Sutton-third in computer science; Josh Birke-second in physics; Jason Pfannebecker-third physics.
