Veterans Day is celebrated each year on Nov. 11. As that day was a Sunday this year, a variety of events were held in the area to honor veterans starting on Friday and wrapping up on Monday.
The 19th annual Red Bud Community Veterans Day Ceremony was held on Nov. 11 in the Red Bud High School gymnasium.
This year’s featured speaker was SSgt. Steven Martin of Red Bud. He is stationed at Scott Air Force Base with the 932nd Air Refueling Wing.
Martin started off by thanking all veterans for their service, adding that no matter which branch they served in, it is a great and selfless act to serve our country.
He went on to discuss his military career and experience, noting that he originally hadn’t intended to join the Air Force, but it has subsequently shaped his life.
“Overall, I thank God every day for the opportunity to serve my country,” he said. “Joining the Air Force was the greatest decision of my life.”
Martin acknowledged that there are service members serving in dangerous areas and asked for a moment of silence for them.
